I started school at Northeast in the ninth grade. Our new school was still under construction and I remember us having to go to the "old" Ft. Lauderdale High School buildings in downtown Ft. Laud. city. That OLD school was so old and run-down I recall seeing signs "condemned" on one building. The gymnasium building had old wooden walls and smelled terrible. Then at last, when we returned back to school, I was in the 10th grade. We were to report to our BRAND NEW Northeast High School on NE 56 St. WOW .. was it beautiful. I think it took a lot of us some time to realize that this was "OUR" Northeast High School !! We even had our own parking lot ... no more having to park in the field. And if you didn't get caught, we would do burn-outs in the parking lot as we were leaving school. I also recall having to make a "few" trips to the Dean's Office where Mr. Dean Myers felt sorry for me and gave me a putty knife and a small brown bag, then was told to go into the cafeteria and scrape off the old gum that somehow (?) got stuck under the dining tables. Ahhh ... the old memories of those days in high school... THOSE WERE THE DAYS !!
